What Inly Means to Me

Birthdays at School
At Inly, each child’s birthday (through third grade) is celebrated in the classroom with the other children. Each child is assigned a “special day” to commemorate his or her birthday. This may or may not be in proximity to the actual birth date, which allows us to celebrate each child’s birthday whether it falls on a weekend, a holiday, or during the summer break.

Coffee House
This event is run by the Middle School and is an “open mike” variety show featuring the Middle School Rock Band, Inly parents, alumni, and faculty. The event is geared toward an older audience (4th grade and up).

Community Service
Teaching children about the importance and rewards of community service is an important part of our school values. Some of these efforts are coordinated through the after-school program, others happen in class.

Flying Up Ceremony
On the last day of school, Inly honors children who are moving to a new program level at Inly. Those students will "fly up" to their new class. Parents and friends are welcome.

At the year’s end, Inly celebrates those students who are graduating from kindergarten and middle school. Watch a video of some eighth grade speeches as these graduates talk about what an Inly education meant to them.

Grandfriends’ Day
We invite our students’ grandparents (or another person special to the child) to join our children at school for a morning. It is a special day where the children can share their classroom experience with other members of their family or another special friend.

As a school, we celebrate Halloween by allowing the children to come to school that day in their costumes. In the morning the whole school comes together for a parade around the soccer field so that everyone can see the costumes. Parents are welcome to attend as well. We ask that parents be involved in preparing the child’s costume so that unnecessary “editing” does not have to happen at school. We need to remember that there are very young children who participate with us, and we do not want to upset them. There are to be no full-face masks.

Parent Gatherings
Room parents organize potluck gatherings in the fall as a casual, fun way to get to know the other parents in the class and to reconnect with old friends.

We observe this holiday in the classrooms in a variety of ways. Most classes involve the parents and sponsor some sort of celebration that incorporates an element of thankfulness, an awareness of the needs of other people in the world, and sharing from our own bountiful lives.

Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s day is celebrated in each classroom. Names are drawn and the children create a handmade valentine at home for the one child whose name was drawn. Then, on or close to February 14, the valentines are shared and appreciated by all the children. We try to make the emphasis non-commercial and candy-free.
