Summer is a season full of possibilities. With a little extra time and a slower pace, children have more opportunities to explore, ask questions, and discover the world around them.

At Inly, we see learning everywhere. It can happen while planting a garden, preparing a meal, exploring the backyard, or sharing everyday moments with family. Montessori reminds us that children are naturally curious and capable. When we invite them to participate, make choices, and try new things, we help them build confidence and independence.

Here are a few simple ways to bring the Montessori spirit into your home this summer:

1. Invite Your Child Into Everyday Life

Children love being part of the real work of the household. Folding laundry, preparing a snack, watering plants, setting the table, or helping wash the car are meaningful opportunities to build independence and a sense of belonging.

Try asking: “Would you like to help me with this?” You may be surprised by how eager your child is to contribute.

2. Grow Something Together

Whether you have a backyard garden, a few pots on a patio, or a small herb plant on a windowsill, caring for something living is a wonderful summer experience. Children can dig, plant, water, observe changes, and celebrate the excitement of seeing something grow.

3. Become Nature Detectives

Summer is the perfect time to slow down and notice the world around us. Take a walk and look closely at leaves, insects, birds, clouds, or interesting rocks. Encourage your child to draw what they see, collect observations, or create a nature journal.

The goal isn’t to have all the answers. It’s to nurture the joy of wondering.

4. Let Your Child Take the Lead in the Kitchen

Cooking together is full of learning moments. Children can measure ingredients, practice sequencing, make choices, and experience the satisfaction of creating something to share.

Try letting your child choose a family snack or help prepare a favorite summer recipe.

5. Create a Space for Independent Exploration

A Montessori-inspired environment doesn’t need to be complicated. A basket of art supplies, a stack of library books, a puzzle, a magnifying glass, or a collection of natural objects can invite children to explore at their own pace.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping children feel capable and confident.

6. Encourage Creativity Without a “Right Way”

Offer open-ended materials like cardboard boxes, clay, paint, fabric scraps, or recycled materials and see where your child’s imagination takes them.

At Inly, the process matters just as much as the finished product. Creativity grows when children have the freedom to experiment.

7. Follow Their Curiosity

Did your child become fascinated by dinosaurs, insects, oceans, space, or how things work? Follow that spark! Visit the library, explore a museum, watch a nature documentary, or investigate their questions together.

Children often become the deepest learners when they are following an interest that belongs to them.

8. Practice Kindness and Grace & Courtesy

Summer brings many opportunities to practice kindness and community, whether welcoming guests, caring for siblings, sharing materials, or noticing how our actions affect others.

Simple conversations about kindness, patience, and respect help children develop the social awareness that is at the heart of Montessori.

9. Offer Choices Throughout the Day

Children thrive when they have opportunities to make meaningful decisions. Offer choices when possible: “Would you like to read before or after lunch?” or “Would you like to help water the plants or set the table?”

Small moments of choice help children develop independence and confidence.

10. Make Time to Wonder Together

Some of the most memorable summer learning happens when we slow down. Watch the sunset, search for fireflies, ask questions, tell stories, and enjoy being together.

When we give children time and space to explore, they remind us that learning is everywhere.

Try This at Home:

Choose one everyday activity this week and invite your child to take ownership of it. Whether it’s preparing a snack, caring for a plant, or organizing a space, you’re helping your child develop the confidence to say, “I can do it.”

That feeling of capability is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children.
