TED Talk: Do Schools Kill Creativity?

"Practice in creative behaviors is the springboard for life-long creative thinking. These skills are necessary to build 21st-century thinkers."

~ Donna Milani Luther, Head of School

Creative thinking & solutions

The Inly "culture of creativity" permeates every classroom, from pre-K through grade 8. Creativity and creative-problem solving are actively encouraged and integrated in all subject areas.

In our academic curriculum, we challenge our students to become problem solvers and creative thinkers by constantly asking them:
  • to take risks
  • to take another look at things they think they already know
  • to find unique ways to present their knowledge to others

Arts education & 21st century skills

At Inly we take arts education seriously. Our rich visual and performing arts curriculum benefits all students, at every level.

What Do the Arts Teach Us?

1. The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships.
2. The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.
3. The arts celebrate multiple perspectives.
4. The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem-solving, purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity.
5. The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know.

– Elliot Eisner, 10 Lessons the Arts Teach UsThe Arts and the Creation of Mind, Yale University Press, 2002

The value of theater arts

Every Inly student participates in an annual theater production, from Kindergarten through Middle School. Drama and musical theater are integral components of our arts curriculum and enhance learning in significant ways:

  • Learning to sing helps students excel in their diction and public speaking.
  • Practicing improvisation hones the lifelong skill of relating to people in all kinds of situations.
  • Learning choreography improves students’ spatial awareness and expands their ability to learn patterns and sequences.
  • Reading and memorizing lines reinforces the academic skills they are learning in the classroom.
  • Working with a team to transform an empty stage into a memorable story empowers students to be creative.
  • Participating in an annual theater production helps students learn how to confidently present themselves to the world.
