Name: Derek Stolp
Dept: Middle School
Title: Math Teacher
Year Appointed: 2005
Phone: 781-545-5544 x146
Derek Stolp received his A.B. in economics from Hobart College and his M.S. in mathematics from Northeastern University. He taught most recently at Provincetown High School but prior to that, he taught mathematics in independent schools for 35 years, including four years at Derby Academy and 29 at Milton Academy, where he also served as chairman of the Mathematics Department for ten years.
In the spring of 2005, he published a book entitled Mathematics Miseducation: The Case Against a Tired Tradition in which he argues that schools should be places where children gather together with adults to make sense of their worlds, where children are active participants in the creation of knowledge rather than passive recipients of disembodied facts, where the moral development of children is a priority, and where caring for others is nurtured in every activity, intellectual and otherwise. He is delighted to have found in Inly a school that shares these beliefs.
In 2009, Derek launched a website where he publishes his algebra curriculum: www.algebra1models.org.
