Donna on Life After Inly
Here is what I've learned: Our students are articulate and well educated. Like all students, they have favorite subjects in school. What I love is that they have least favorite subjects, too, and have learned strategies that they are comfortable with to improve and even like them. "My teacher helped me find a great graphic organizer that helps me write clearly." "I do that homework first, and save my favorite for last." "I didn't really like math before, but my teacher is great and helps make it fun and interesting."
These students also have great insight about their interesting experiences at Inly -- what they have learned and how they can apply it to other situations. The open ocean rowing program and business internships are clearly a big plus. Our students already have impressive resumes! Their ability to recognize what their unusual opportunities have been, and how well they are prepared for high school is great. One told me that "studying forms of government and writing the class constitution has helped me realize the sense of freedom balanced with responsibility that I've been given here."
I am so fortunate. As you know, I have a job that gives me day-to-day contact with your terrific children and their fabulous teachers. Conducting these mock interviews has given me an inspiring long view that I also need for this work. I wish our eighth graders well in their interviews. My preparation only ices the cake, the real work has been taking place since Children's House!
