A Day in Upper Elementary
8:20
I arrive around 8:20 and hang up my backpack, lunch and coat and finally put on my indoor shoes. After I take out all of my binders and assignment notebook from my backpack, I head over to my cubby to put things away. With some of my friends, we take a look at the problem of the day that is on the board in the morning and record it in my notebooks.
8:45
We all gather on the rug while someone reveals the answer to the problem and then one of my teachers goes over the schedule of the day.
9:00
My math group is called and everyone in my small group meets at one of the tables. After a quick “Mad Minute” to practice my multiplication tables, my review lesson on decimals begins. Using the decimal board, I practice with a partner reading and then writing decimals. Looking at the board, helps me remember the place value names. At the end of the lesson, my teacher gives us work that we all write in our assignment notebook.
9:45
After a quick snack at the snack table, I head into the Toddler room to spend some time with the younger children. I have been going there for a few months, so some of the kids call out my name when I walk in. They are just about to go out for recess, so I help the teachers get the children ready with their coats and hats.
10:45
Back in my class, I know have some independent time, so I begin working on some language work from the language shelf along with some reading comprehension.
11:15
I now have Spanish in the resource room and today we are reading aloud our creative stories that we have written in Spanish. I am surprised at how much I understand while listening to everyone else’s stories.
12:00
It is finally lunch time and this is the time I love to hang out with my friends and plan what we are going to do at recess time.
12:30
Recess time!
1:00
We now all have our literature groups. I am currently reading, “Because of Winn Dixie” which I love and at the end of the book, we are going to watch the movie so we can compare the story to the movie. I wonder how much difference there will be.
1:45
I have some independent time, so I meet with my advisor to go over an essay that I wrote for Writer’s Workshop. During the rest of the day I work on my perfecting my final draft.
2:30
Someone has rung the bell to signal the end of the day. I clean up my area, do my job, which is washing tables, and then gather up my homework after I have checked my assignment notebook. We all gather on the rug for any final announcements. We are getting ready to go out on a trip tomorrow to the art museum to complete our ancient civilizations research.
3:00
Today I am playing football during the after school program and will be picked up by my Mom at 4:00.
