Classroom Structure
The Montessori Classroom: A Carefully Prepared Educational Environment
An Inly classroom is...
- a developmentally appropriate, prepared space
- a large, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing place to do work
- designed to engage a student's curiosity and love of learning
- equipped with materials that encourage sensorial exploration and discovery
- a child-centered community
- an environment that allows for both small group work and individualized, independent work
-
structured with a low student/teacher ratio

Multi-Age Classes: A Mainstay of Montessori Education
Montessori classrooms are multi-age by design. Montessori students are not bound by traditional grade levels, so they can move ahead when they're academically and developmentally ready for new work.
Montessori students are not held back while waiting for others to catch up. And when they need extra time to reinforce a lesson or concept, they can work individually at their own pace without impacting the rest of the class.
That's just one of the many benefits of multi-age classes at Inly.
Why Multi-Age Classes?
- Students stay with the same teachers for two to three years.
- Teachers really get to know each child as an individual.
- Students can work beyond traditional grade levels when ready.
- More independent and individualized work.
- More opportunities for small-group work relative to ability and interest.
- Less time spent on transition, more time spent on meaningful work.
- Opportunities for broad social development.
- Younger children learn from older children and quickly absorb the academic and social expectations.
- Older students reinforce learning and leadership by teaching younger students.
-
A range of ages and abilities builds tolerance and appreciation of differences.
